MONDAY MENTAL PROTEIN: YOU, The New CEO in Town

CEOAt school I recall completing an essay and held many subsequent  discussions on “Being President For A Day” during my English Literacy class.  We  were commissioned to write how we would use or “abuse” our given powers as President.

Of course the class nationalist would nationalize the economy. The class philanthropist would do everything he could “for the needy”.  The class capitalists would do everything they could to create wealth.  The class fools would foolishly create a multitude of public holidays and longer paid vacations.  Yet we all wanted to change something…reduce crime, increase literacy, improve service delivery etc.

As I reflect on that exercise I realize that YOU are in fact president of your own self.  I am CEO, State president or Managing Director of “THE VINESH MAHARAJ FAMILY TRUST”, just as you are of your own “personal” or “family trust”.  Is your trust growing in health and wealth or is it on the decline into debt and disease?  Everything you think, say and do has consequent effects on you and your family.  Be it in your Economy, Health, Education, Home etc.  Why day dream about being president or CEO when actually you already are?

Here is the challenge most people fail at.  They fail at having a game-plan.  They get into life, trying to build the ship while sailing.  Dangerous living is it not?  The CEO, President or Managing Director has the responsibility for result achievement.  Do you want to be famed for your success or become infamous for your lack thereof?

Today I wish to share with you these truths about your results:

  1. What you see, is what YOU have created – You cannot blame the government, the economy, or your lack of education for your current situation.  You must start by taking 100% responsibility for your current status.  In good or bad, accept your personal participation.  By active or tacit agreement, through decisions and actions here you are.  Like it or lump it, the facts are the facts.
  2. Status Quo Dissonance? – Are you really happy with the current state of affairs?  Or have you come to settle for things as they are because that’s how the chips have fallen?  If you could change your current status what would you change?  Think about the toxic people you may want to reconsider.  Are you happy with the  state of your health, wealth, relationships etc?  Having a healthy dissonance about your current status can be the impetus or fuel that feeds the furnace of success.
  3. Change – Daily we change our clothes, sometimes our cars and even our homes but how often do we change our minds?  “To change the worldyou must first change your mind.” said Jimi Hendrix long before popular psychology.  To change our results, we must start to change ourselves. Challenge your own perceptions and realities and if you cant, then have others challenge them for you.
  4. Design a Life – Go back to the drawing board – We spend months and years planning a wedding or vacation but spend not even an hour in drawing up a “LIFE PLAN”.  Craft your path and the road will reveal itself to you.  Start with the end in mind and fill in the pieces like a jig saw puzzle.
  5. Challenge yourself – When things get tough, its time for you to get tougher.  Who said it will be smooth sailing?  The reason the bottom is full is because success comes at a price most are unwilling or unable to pay.  Do you have the “currency” to pay for your success?
  6. Work, work and more work – Ask any successful person about the “secret to success”.  They are always working hard at their plans.  It sometimes takes the 100th strike at the rock to break it.  Don’t think for a moment that the preceding 99 were futile.  They were instrumental in wearing down the rock, breaking down its resistance.  So after planning, strike away for you might strike gold.
  7. Measure and Manage – Keep score, watch your daily, weekly, monthly and annual dashboards.  Track your progress, stop to refuel and most of all, enjoy the journey.  The sweetness of success is not only in the arrival.  Its in the entire journey.  Building quality relationships, overcoming obstacles, winning small wins etc. are all reminiscent of the final victory.

Like Mahatma Gandhi said “We must become the change we wish to see in the world” – its now up to you.  Will you embrace that change or will you surrender to the status quo, more of the same…

MONDAY MENTAL PROTEIN: Tired of Majoring in the Minors?

Far too many of us are busy making a living and have failed at designing a life.

We chase the lure of quick cash in the name of “career growth”, skipping and hopping between jobs and fail to fill our resume with new skills, knowledge, habits and attitudes, yet we delude ourselves that we can create new outcomes based on old ways of thinking…

If you are tired of majoring in the minors then listen up. Its time to embrace the much needed investment in YOU. We “invest” in cars and homes yet we fail to invest in our greatest asset. Yes, the asset reading this right now. According to the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule, 20% of all people make 80% of the money. So how can you join this top 20%?

It’s elementary.The world is willing to pay top dollar for highly trained, skilled competence that gets results. Sadly we graduate school, college or university and for most people that’s where the journey ends. For those super achievers among us that’s where the journey begins. They recognize that academic learning is merely the starting point of success. They go on to develop their success habits through books, courses, coaching and seminars which will separate them from the rest of the players.

You can tell how tall a building is going to be, by the depth of its foundation. Build your foundation so deep that you will always be in the top 20%. School prepares you with the A, B, C’s and the 1, 2, 3’s of life. You need to fulfill the rest. Here is a list which is never taught at school but the world is seeking daily:

1. Sales – Yes, you too are a sales person. To have landed your current job, you sold your skills to your employer. What if you could sell at a higher premium or sold more effectively? Well, the leading head hunters will have you on speed dial with more and more attractive offers to lure you to your next opportunity. Master the art of selling and be assured of continued success across industries.

2. Marketing – All day and night we are marketing to our staff, colleagues and customers. If you were better equipped you would be marketing the socks off your competitors by bringing more value to our customers. What if you spent a few hours a week marketing “ME INC”. The market awareness increases and so does your brand.

3. Branding – No one taught you about branding at school did they? It was always for corporates, leading clothing brands, cars etc. Or so you thought. Until you acknowledge your brand and start better branding you sadly wont join the top 20%. Get help to master your brand, your message, what you stand for etc and the world will stop to take note.

4. Communication – Everyday we communicate with only 2 objectives; to encourage or discourage behaviour. In sales we want to encourage our customers to buy. The judicial system wants to discourage criminal behaviour. What if you had the words, tone, emotion, body language, influence and ability to get results better and quicker? Barack Obama became president on his ability to communicate. Invest in becoming a world class communicator and watch your career soar.

5. Networking – Everyday we have small talk with potentially influential people. What if you shifted the discussion in a manner which served your goal of joining the top 20%? Take advantage of your networks by asking for introductions, meetings, coffee or lunch with people who could take you to the top 20%? Small talk can only bring you small minded outcomes. By networking you could walk into a dream contract, customer, employer or business deal which opens up your growth surpassing the inflation related growth most are accustomed to.

Drop the existence model of surviving and embrace the model of thriving. You hold the keys to you future. Its either going to be more of the same or its going to be phenomenal, spectacular, mind-blowing and more fulfilling than you thought possible.You decide…

“I am coming to conquer you. Every man, woman and child shall have my name on their lips: Charles Spencer Chaplin!”

Many of us are probably too young to remember Charlie Chaplin, who is regarded as the father of comedy.  Those who do remember, have come to laugh or cry at the sheer genius of his black and white, silent movies.

Charlie Chaplin’s impressive career spanning over 75 years is a rags to riches tale, starting with a tough childhood spent in severe poverty and hardship.  “I was hardly aware of a crisis because we lived in a continual crisis; and, being a boy, I dismissed our troubles with gracious forgetfulness.”   Charlie Chaplin spoke of being abandoned by his father, losing his mother to mental health and an early death, ultimately going to a child labour home.  These challenges did not stop Charlie Chaplin as he went on from the theatre stage to the new technology of its time a “motion picture” to becoming a legend of his era.  The Charlie Chaplin Success Story is majorly unsung.

Today I wish to share with you some insight to The Charlie Chaplin Success Story.  Here are 3 things which made him an Icon:

Massive Talent: 

From boyhood, Charlie Chaplin watched and imitated people walking past his mothers window front where she sewed for a living.  He had his first role at 5 years old but really started acting at age 13 and did not quit.  Not only did he work on stage and motion pictures, he also acted, produced, directed, wrote music and was a published author.  Silent movies were an art form used to create high emotion and communication without any vocal audio whatsoever.  In his later years Charlie Chaplin did produce movies with dialogue roles in them further pushing on his talents.

Extraordinary Hard Work:

“I (was) news vendor, printer, toymaker, doctor’s boy, etc., but during these occupational digressions, I never lost sight of my ultimate aim to become an actor,” Chaplin later recalled. “So, between jobs I would polish my shoes, brush my clothes, put on a clean collar and make periodic calls at a theatrical agency.”

Without discounting the fact that he worked 75 years of the 88 he lived, speaks volumes.  In a time when movies were shot in one take, because of Charlie Chaplin’s commitment to world class quality and standards he would shoot more than 3 takes.  Furthermore he would spend countless hours thinking, planning and shooting his movies.  Charlie Chaplin had a relentless work ethic.  He would sometimes shut down production just to rethink the entire production.  In todays movie industry that would be unthinkable due to huge costs and losses but because his reputation was at stake and because he owned his work, he did.

The harder I work, the luckier I get:

Its not that the most talented or gifted person succeeds, it is the one who sweats daily in the direction of his or her goals who does.  Charlie Chaplin started young, worked hard and pushed the envelope at his craft and his personal life.  He broke the rules and chased boundaries others were comfortable at.  He took to the new technologies like a duck to water, embracing their potential, not fearing them.  Some may call it a lucky break but after 75 years who can argue, Charlie Chaplin created his own luck, embracing his goal; “I am coming to conquer you. MONDAY MENTAL PROTEIN: Living The Madiba Ideals

Today marks the holiday celebration of Freedom Day in South Africa.  It celebrates the 20th anniversary of South African democracy.  This achievement is due largely to the efforts of many unsung hero’s, yet one who stands out like an icon, is none other than the late Nelson Mandela.  MONDAY-MENTAL-PROTEIN---The-Madiba-Ideals

Madiba as he is affectionately known, was a man who stood for many great ideals.  His inner conviction exceeded any doubts about the success and achievement of his goal or objective.  Listed below are some “Madiba Ideals” I wish upon you, so that your inner conviction grows making you unstoppable.

VISION – Madiba “saw the future” of a Rainbow Nation.  A country for all, at a time when most people resigned to “reality”.  Whatever your current status, hold onto that vision of your success and achievement.  Imprint it on your mind and remain faithful to it.  Don’t waiver, don’t quit, don’t be fooled by others visions for you.  Remain true to your vision.

BELIEVE – Success really is for everyone, if they can rise above their circumstances. Its not for a select few.  Rather, it is the select few who believe that it is possible for them.  Madiba believed in his blood that it is for everyone.  Now you believe…

THE POWER OF PERSUASION – STEP 2:

Buyers resistance is a reality for any sales person.  Buyers always have an arms length of reasons why the wont buy from you.  Your job is to overcome his resistance through the art of persuasion.

Find Common Ground and Values.  The golden rule of selling is that “people buy from people, they like and trust”.  Right now, you are a stranger with little to no credibility.  However when you find common values your relationship strengthens and dramatically increases the likelihood of your prospect becoming a customer.

You find Common Ground and Values by going “below the iceberg”.  Remember that almost 90% of the iceberg is below the water and all you can see is what the prospect wants you to see.  By asking targeted, high value questions and listening intently to the answers you slowly start to uncover the iceberg.

Listen past the words.  Hear the emotions.  What does your prospect value?  What does he care about?  There is much value in going beyond the surface level facts.  Once you identify that chord of Common Ground and Values, you have a platform to speak from.

10 Rules for Living an Outrageously Fulfilling Life

Today I want to share with you some of the rules for living an Outrageously Fulfilling Life.  More than share, I want you to imbibe these principles and commit to living your life in glory, rather than in your shadows for far too many are sleep-walking through life.  William Wallace infamously said “Every man dies.  Not every man really lives”.

 

1.  SHOW UP! – Show up in your work, your relationships and activities.  Don’t count yourself as physically present therefore having achieved.  Give yourself whole heartedly to your craft, your relationships and activities.  Be there in thought, word and deed.  Too many are physically present but are mentally or emotionally zoned out elsewhere.  Show up!

2.  BE GRATEFUL – Far too many people go through life chasing the rainbow.  Slow down…stop…catch your breath and appreciate the accomplished.  Be deeply grateful with heart and mind for all the wonderful people, experiences and comforts you have.  Be sincere and more is bestowed upon you.  Be grateful.

3.  GIVE MORE – “Sharing is caring”, my 9 year old daughter keeps reminding me and I cannot disagree.  Give more love, more, words of encouragement and support, give heartfelt smiles and greetings to everyone you meet.  So what if they think you’re a mad man?  Share bread with the needy, give time to the lonely and hope to the destitute.  These acts of kindness are seeds of human prosperity.  Keep sowing…keep giving more.

4. GIVE CREDIT, NOT CRITICISM – Be the first to applaud others, giving them credit but never criticism.  You can always correct unwanted behaviours in private through encouraging new ways of thought and behaviour, never through criticism.  Your support of your family, friends, colleagues, staff etc will inspire them to give more and more.  So remember give credit, not criticism.

5.  STRETCH  – CHALLENGE YOURSELF – Go above and beyond the call of duty at whatever you do.  Under promise but over deliver like a champ!  Most people wont go the first mile, how will they go the last mile?  Whatever you do, stretch!

6.  READ –  commit to reading something inspirational, motivational or educational everyday.   This small act will change your perceptions, give you new thoughts and ideas, methods and strategies to be exceptional.  “Read to lead” or “learn to earn”.  Either way keep on reading.

7.  WORK OUT – Like your life depended on it.  A healthy body is a healthy mind.  Develop new mastery and work out daily.

8.  LEAVE A LEGACY – Leave the world and people around you better off through the proud legacy you leave behind.  What will you be remembered for?  Not just the inheritance I hope.  Leave a legacy.

9.  PRIORITIZE – Don’t get busy, without prioritizing first.  Establish your most important tasks with highest value and strike away at those first.  Busy is not always productive.  Prioritize.

10.  YOU RUN YOUR LIFE – Don’t get distracted by others agenda’s or life’s time thief.  Run your own life.  Chase whats important to you.  Give up the wasteful hours spent on minor distractions. Run your own life.

Let your mortality fuel your mastery, bringing about an Outrageously Fulfilling Life for you, your loved ones, your community and ultimately leave this world a better place than you found it.

Whether you love, or hate the local fast food joints, you have to give credit where credit is due.  I’m certainly not referring to the highly processed, salty, fat infused, fried, nutrition-less foods they serve.  There are other Customer Service gems you can take away from these chains, along with your take out.

Here is some food for thought.  No pun intended.

Organization & Planning 

The organization and planning that goes into these well run, global fast food chains is world class.  Have you ever heard of them running out of anything?  They keep their customers happy, time and time again.  They understand their business so well, they know the demand of their product and serve them with a smile.  They plan meticulously and they get it right.

Time management

Some fast food chains operate 24 hours a day to keep their loyal following, following.  Did you know in some of these fast food chains you can get a full meal in about 1 minute?  They serve it up fast food style.  Saving you time.

Hygiene

They are committed to keeping their diners spotless.  Not just the tables and floors but their kitchens are almost surgically clean.  They get that you value hygiene and they clean to impress.

Team work

They are a well oiled unit.  Each person performing a unique, yet related activity to serve you, their loyal customer.  Everyone has a specialized function and knows their job so well, there is little to no room for error.  They work like a team with one goal in mind.  Keep them coming back again and again and again…

Consistency

Every store you visit serves it up in exactly the same way.  Its consistent in size, shape, presentation, taste, time, cost, packaging etc.  They get that the recipe of success can be duplicated.  They are consistent and that keeps their customer loyalty high.

Convenience

They provide a valued service to their customers.  To provide you with convenience, they also have a delivery and a drive through service.  Ingenious.

Value

There is a product on their menu’s for every budget.  As Warren Buffet said “price is what you pay, value is what you get”.  You can feed an entire family rather inexpensively without taking into account the cost of your time had you spent the evening cooking.

Staff Training

Most of these fast food company’s have excellent training facilities which have the newbies oriented with the culture, ethos, values and mission of the company.  No newbie is unleashed into the stores until they have a firm, full grip on competencies required to fulfill the quality and service requirements mandated by the chain.  The newbies can spend weeks to months in incubation, mastering their craft.

Salesmanship

The fast food chain staff are so well trained they always ask to up-sell or cross sell you when you place your order.  The next time you visit, listen for the magic words:  “Sir, can I upsize your order” or Ma’am, would you like dessert with that”?

The next time you are at one of the infamous fast food chains, look around you and observe how they execute the customer services trap.  Take stock of  “When was I last here?  What do I usually order?  Why do I keep coming back?”  etc.  The fact that they serve the “needs” of their customers keeps their balance sheet healthy and the queues lining up.
