There are two ways to have the worlds tallest building. One, is to get to work and start building. The other is to demolish all the other buildings taller than yours. Both ways will get you results but which can you celebrate with your teams, be they colleagues, family or friends? Does trampling others buildings inspire and motivate your genius? Does trampling other buildings result in victory? Does trampling other buildings liberate your greatness?
You get a new customer and “Mr. Hubris” talks about his greatest customer. You buy a new car…he talks about his “friend” who bought a “better” car. You book a family holiday and he tells you about how he went off to a “better” holiday. He is a building trampler. Whatever you do, he does better. Whatever you know, he knows more. Whatever you start to say, he has to have the final say. You know who I am talking about.
No one enjoys the company of such an arrogant and self absorbed person. No one, but themselves. Their illusions of grandeur and self importance fills the room with the smell of desperately low self esteem. Every office, business, family or social group has that one person who due to their low self esteem, lack of self confidence and self belief, overshadows and tinges every interaction with them with either disgust or disappointment.
Pride with authenticity, is uplifting not just to the owner but to people they interact with. They act in confidence and with productivity. They don’t run others down for self importance. Hubristic pride, is based on arrogance and egoism. They leave bitter tastes wherever they go. Don’t confuse Confidence with Arrogance, even for yourself. “There is a thin line between pride and arrogance, its called humility. Confidence smiles, arrogance, smirks” – Unknown
Here are 8 Golden Rules Rules to ensure your behaviour:
- Be Proud, Not Boastful
- Be Confident, Not Arrogant
- Be Humble, Not Hubristic
- Be Encouraging, Not Insincere
- Be Courteous and Respectful, Not Disdainful
- Have a Quiet Confidence, Not Loud Bravado
- Have Gratitude, Not Entitlement
- Be the Best YOU that you can be, Not the best SOMEONE ELSE
C.S Lewis said it aptly when he said “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less”. Today, start building your tallest building, be it your business, career, wealth, health, relationships through work, not through trampling the buildings of others. Compete with yourself. Be your best. Fill your cup. Drink deep your humility and be loved for who you are.
